Change your attitude and the world is yours.

A stumbling block to the pessimist is a stepping-stone to the optimist. Eleanor Roosevelt.

For things to change for the better, you must change your attitude An attitude is a way of thinking, they shape how we relate to the world both in work and outside of work.

Let me give you a couple of examples:

See all your setbacks as detours, not dead ends.Successful people know that to be able to embrace their adversities, will lead to their future success. As Walt Disney put it ,All the adversity I've had in my life ,all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me. When you feel you have failed, look for the lesson and remember all the times you have succeeded. Don’t focus on critics. Anybody who succeeds knows they have to overcome the naysayers. Instead of focusing on the past and worrying about the future, keep your focus on the now, this is where your greatest influence is. When you get distracted, bring all your focus back to the breath.

There are many positive attitudes that can help you get ahead. In fact, the value of these attitudes is they make you more motivated and in turn gives you a boost.

Enthusiasm is one of them.To be enthusiastic at work is all about a mental state. You need to make the decision to change your attitude to be enthusiastic. You become what you think, not what you want.So before you begin any task bring your full energy to it,do not tell yourself this is boring or whatever your choice of excuse is that you tell yourself normally, this will make you feel worse and drained. Words are powerful, there is a big difference in telling yourself, I can try and I can do it.This is the attitude that will get you ahead in any given situation in work and life. Changing a company or any situation begins with the first step of changing yourself and you do this this with your attitude. Finish strong in everything you do, strive for excellence, don’t settle for your good ,only settle for your best. This is the attitude that gets you ahead.

Finally,

People with goals succeed because they know where they are going.  Earl Nightingale.

Responding mindfully gives you power in the workplace.

Do you have the patience to wait till your mud settles and the water is clear? Lao Tzu.

More often than not we react to situations and circumstances without thinking, its a knee jerk reaction, often based on our fears and insecurities. Our emotions take centre stage and they become the driving force with which we react, and we lose control. Our hearts race and our stomachs tighten, this means our defences are on full alert. Reacting is instinctual.
  • Reaction- is quick so you will probably end up regretting what you have said.
  • Reaction- is emotion filled which can lead to frustration.
  • Reaction- causes discontent and disagreement, which resolves nothing.

On the other hand ,to respond is to be more thoughtful. It gives you control in any given situation and circumstance, whereby you can respond calmly and with logic. It simply means taking the situation in and making a decision as to how you would like to respond e.g. with compassion, co-operation. Responding is a conscious choice which gives you power. It also heightens emotional intelligence.
  • Respond- empowers you thereby giving you control.
  • Respond- removes all emotions.
  • Respond- resolves conflict quickly.

Mindfulness gives you this choice. It allows a window of opportunity to respond rather than react. It turns off the defence button in the brain and it allows you to respond with control and empowerment. When you feel the urge to act irrationally, pause, take a breath, this will bring you into the present moment and anchor you, now bring your full awareness into your body and proceed with your response.

The world is changed by your example not by your opinion -Paulo Coelho
